“Read it or Ditch it” is a weekly feature I’m doing each Monday. Every week I’ll select a book that has sat unread on my shelves for longer than a year and ask the question “Read it or Ditch it?”. If I still want to read it, then by posting it here I’m claiming that I’ll read it by the end of the year. If I’m no longer interested in the book, then this is a send off to the title since I’ll either be donating or selling it.
At the end of the year, I’ll do a round-up post to see how I did. If there are any titles that I said I’d read, but still didn’t, then I’ll either donate or sell those.
Inkheart
Author: Cornelia Funke
Published: 2003
Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy
Series: Inkworld #1
Length of Time on TBR Pile: about 7 years
Read it or Ditch it?: Ditch it
I bought Inkheart back when I was working at a bookstore in 2009. Normally, I don’t read middle grade books, but when I was working there I tried to read them occasionally. I did this mostly so that I could make recommendations for that age group. I picked this one up in particular because, around that time period, the movie came out with Brendan Fraser and it looked interesting. I just never got around to reading it back then and I’m no longer interested in it. So, this one’s going to be donated.
For those interested, here’s the synopsis:
Twelve-year-old Meggie learns that her father, who repairs and binds books for a living, can “read” fictional characters to life when one of those characters abducts them and tries to force him into service.
Characters from books literally leap off the page in this engrossing fantasy. Meggie has had her father to herself since her mother went away when she was young. Mo taught her to read when she was five, and the two share a mutual love of books. He can “read” characters out of books. When she was three, he read aloud from a book called Inkheart and released characters into the real world. At the same time, Meggie’s mother disappeared into the story. This “story within a story” will delight not just fantasy fans, but all readers who like an exciting plot with larger-than-life characters.
Don’t feel bad, I have some TBR books that have been sitting for 10 years. I say give it a shot!

OMG! I didn’t know it was a movie?? (Or maybe I did, but lost track of it because I wasn’t that interested in the book lol.) I remember always trying to read that book in middle school, but never got around to it after my own reader friends said it was boring. So, I’m glad you decided to ditch it! (Plus, 7 years on the TBR pile?? Lol sounds like a while)

Oh! That’s good to know that the book didn’t really interest you all that much when you tried to read it. And yeah, 7 years is a long time to have it just taking up space on my shelves. Sad this is that there are books on my bookshelves that I’ve had longer than that one. 😛
Yup! There’s a movie. It has Brendan Fraser in it, which peaks my interest. He’s usually fun to watch, so I’m tempted to still rent the movie eventually.

I think I had this book on my TBR for a while too. I personally ditched 🙂

Good to know I’m not the only one who has decided to ditch it over the years. 😛

One of my girls read this series and really liked it. I will have to get the movie for her now. I read very little MG anymore but once in awhile I like to, especially if one of my children are.

Oh really? It’s good to hear that she liked it. I remember it selling fairly well when I worked at the bookstore. I hope your daughter likes the movie!

I don’t read many middle grade books either. I read one trilogy by Kelley Armstrong and Melissa Marr. I enjoyed it, but I love Kelley Armstrong. I’ve also read The Giver by Lois Lowry. That is my extent of middle grade. I’ve bought books thinking I would read them and then never got around to it. Hopefully someone on the other end of your donation will enjoy it.

I love Kelley Armstrong as well. I have a few of her books geared toward young readers on my shelves. I need to get around to reading those.

I read this years ago, as well as Inkspell – but I still have to finish the series, I hope to do it someday, I dislike leaving stories unfinished. But I’ll probably need to re-read at least a part of the first two books because I remember very little about the plot.

I know the feeling. I don’t like leaving stories unfinished either, even though I have quite a few unfinished series on my shelves that I need to circle back to. Hope you like the series when you re-read/finish it.

I know! I’m tempted to do just that. Especially since I enjoy Brendan Fraser.

I’ve wanted to read this one, but its size has always turned me away. This year I’m trying really hard to get away from that mentality, and I may actually get to Inkheart later this year 🙂

Good! I hope you like it if you decide to pick-it up. If I’m remembering right, I think the type is pretty big in Inkheart, so it’s not too bad.
