Best Comics/Graphic Novels Read in 2015

Top 10 of 2015 Week is hosted by Rachel from FiktshunJaime of Two Chicks on BooksMindy of Magical Urban Fantasy Reads, and Nancy of Tales of a Ravenous Reader!

I had a major reading slump this year, which really curtailed the number of books I got through. So, for today’s list I’m going to do a top 6 best comics/graphic novels I read in 2015, rather than a top 10.

Suicide Squad 4

Suicide Squad, Vol 4: Discipline and Punish
Writer:
Ales Kot
Illustrations:
Patrick Zircher
No Review

This New 52 series was an exercise in patience. The first volume was okay. Volume 2 and 3 were borderline horrible.  The only reason I kept reading is because so many people said things got better in this one… and it did. This collection was what I had been wanting when I started the series. It was fun, brutal and, of course, the only volume I didn’t get around to writing a review for this year. Ugh.

chew

Chew, vol. 1: Taster’s Choice
Writer:
 John Layman
Illustrations:
Rob Guillory

All the volumes of Chew I’ve read have been wonderful. (I could have cheated and bumped this list up to a full 10 by adding the other volumes I read, but I’m resisting the temptation. The other collections in this series are worth checking out though.) Chew does a great job of mixing humor and gore together in a fun world where chicken is a hot black market item and some people have odd superpowers connected to food.

long halloween

Batman: The Long Halloween
Writer:
 Jeph Loeb
Illustrations:
Tim Sale
No Review

I didn’t do so well writing reviews for the graphic novels I read this year. I’m hoping to do better with that next year. The Long Halloween is a classic. It’s incredibly well done and features a lot of Batman’s most well known villains (Joker, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, etc.). This is the one I would recommend to someone who has never read a Batman comic before, but would like to give one a try.

pretty deadly

Pretty Deadly, Vol. 1: The Shrike
Writer:
Kelly Sue DeConnick
Illustrations:
Emma Rios
Link to Review

DeConnick is one of my favorite comic writers out there. I’ve loved her Captain Marvel run and really enjoyed the time she spent working on Avengers AssemblePretty Deadly proved to be just as good as her other work. I loved how it mingled elements from Westerns, fairytales and the horror genre. I can’t wait to see where DeConnick and Rios go with the next story arc set in this world.

doctor strange

Doctor Strange: Season 1
Writer:
Greg Pak
Illustrations:
Emma Rios
Link to Review

Doctor Strange: Season 1 was a bit of a surprise for me. I didn’t quite expect to enjoy it as much as I did. While the main plot is rather well tread territory, this is worth the read for Strange’s well done character arc.

lumberjanes

Lumberjanes, Vol 1
Writer:
Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis
Illustrations:
Brooke A. Allen
Link to Review

Lumberjanes has been receiving a lot of well deserved attention lately. It’s Goonies meets Gravity Falls and all set at a summer camp for ladies. A really fun collection that’s targeted primarily to preteens.

  1. I’ve been curious about Suicide Squad since seeing the trailer for the movie, and have been wondering where to start. I thought about the New Suicide Squad: Pure Insanity trade, but saw mixed reviews. I’m new to DC so playing catch up. 🙂

Maybe I’ll get Vol. 1 and then jump to this Vol. 4.

    • I’m fairly new to DC as well. This and a couple Batmans are all I’ve read from DC. I hope you like the New 52 Suicide Squad if you read them. I’m a little unsure about the movie. From the trailer it looks a little iffy to me. Love the casting though. Seems like they did a good job with that.

    • Ooo! I really like those series. I might have to check out the graphic novel version of them. Especially the Women of the Otherworld one.

I hope you like the ones off this list that you decide to pick up!
