Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is Top Ten 2014 Releases I Meant To Read But Didn’t Get To.
All of these are books that caught my interest in 2014 when they were released but I just never got around to actually buying/reading them.
The Darkest Touch by Gena Showalter (Lords of the Underworld #11)
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Fierce immortal warrior. Host to the demon of Disease. Torin’s every touch causes sickness and death—and a worldwide plague. Carnal pleasure is utterly forbidden, and though he has always overcome temptation with an iron will, his control is about to shatter.
Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge (Cruel Beauty Universe #1)
Genre: Young Adult/ Beauty and the Beast re-telling
Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.
Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels #7)
Genre: Urban Fantasy
As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.
Wicked After Midnight by Delilah S. Dawson (Blud #3)
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Steampunk
Life as a contortionist in Criminy’s Clockwork Caravan should be the height of exotic adventure, but for Demi Ward, it’s total dullsville. Until her best friend, Cherie, is stolen by slavers outside of Paris, and Demi is determined to find her.
The Paying Guests by Sarah Walters
Genre: Historical Fiction
It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned; the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa — a large, silent house now bereft of brothers, husband, and even servants — life is about to be transformed as impoverished widow Mrs. Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers.
The Dress Shop of Dreams by Menna Van Pregg
Genre: Magic Realism
Since her parents’ mysterious deaths many years ago, scientist Cora Sparks has spent her days in the safety of her university lab or at her grandmother Etta’s dress shop. Tucked away on a winding Cambridge street, Etta’s charming tiny store appears quite ordinary to passersby, but the colorfully vibrant racks of beaded silks, delicate laces, and jewel-toned velvets hold bewitching secrets: With just a few stitches from Etta’s needle, these gorgeous gowns have the power to free a woman’s deepest desires.
The Collectors Society by Heather Lyons (Collector’s Soceity #1)
Genre: Young Adult/ Alice in Wonderland Retelling
After years in Wonderland, Alice has returned to England as an adult, desperate to reclaim sanity and control over her life. An enigmatic gentleman with an intriguing job offer too tempting to resist changes her plans for a calm existence, though. Soon, she’s whisked to New York and initiated into the Collectors’ Society, a secret organization whose members confirm that famous stories are anything but straightforward and that what she knows about the world is only a fraction of the truth.
Falls the Shadow by Stefanie Gaither
Genre: Young Adult
When Cate Benson was a kid, her sister, Violet, died. Two hours after the funeral, Cate’s family picked up Violet’s replacement. Like nothing had happened. Because Cate’s parents are among those who decided to give their children a sort of immortality—by cloning them at birth—which means this new Violet has the same smile. The same perfect face. Thanks to advancements in mind-uploading technology, she even has all of the same memories as the girl she replaced.
Captain Marvel: Higher, Further, Faster, More by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Genre: Comic
As Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers, comes to a crossroads with a new life and new romance, she makes a dramatic decision that will alter the course of her life – and the entire Marvel Universe – in the months to come. But as Carol takes on a mission to return an alien girl to her homeworld, she lands in the middle of an uprising against the Galactic Alliance! Investigating the forced resettlement of Rocket Girl’s people, Carol discovers that she has a history with the man behind the plot. But when the bad guy tries to blackmail Carol and turn the Avengers against her, it’s payback time!
Bitter Spirits by Jenn Bennett (Roaring Twenties #1)
Genre: Paranormal Romance
It’s the roaring twenties, and San Francisco is a hotbed of illegal boozing, raw lust, and black magic. The fog-covered Bay Area can be an intoxicating scene, particularly when you specialize in spirits…
Aida Palmer performs a spirit medium show onstage at Chinatown’s illustrious Gris-Gris speakeasy. However, her ability to summon (and expel) the dead is more than just an act.
I definitely missed out on reading Cruel Beauty! I hope to eventually get to it. I hope you enjoy these books when you do get around to them.

I really enjoyed your list:) I’ve just got hold of ‘The Paying Guest’ after constantly hearing good things about it – and am very intrigued by ‘Falls the Shadow’ and ‘The Collectors Society’…

A nice looking list – I also have the Paying Guests on my list. I must have a look at the Ilona Andrews book on here – I just read Burn for Me which was the first book I’ve read by this author and I loved it!

I adore Ilona Andrews! I would recommend starting at the beginning of her Kate Daniels series though, since it follows one person on her adventures. Even though I didn’t really start to get into that series until book 3. Hope you like some of Ilona Andrews other stuff if you decide to try one of their other books! 😀

Awesome! I’m glad to hear such a glowing recommendation on it! I haven’t heard too much about it so it made me a little skeptical. I’ll be sure to pick it up soon. Thanks! 😀

I finally got a copy of The Paying Guests! I’ve read two of her older books and loved them, so I’m really looking forward to this one too. And I want to read Captain Marvel!! I just read the 1st volume of Ms. Marvel, and that made me want to check out Captain Marvel too. Looks like you have some great choices here — I hope you find time to catch up and enjoy them.

I read a snippet of The Paying Guests, and it seemed interesting. I can relate to someone being forced to deal with boisterous people.

I am so behind on the Kate Daniel series! I just bought Magic Breaks from BookOutlet a couple of days ago because it was so cheap lol! Is it necessary to read Gunmetal Magic (5.5) before Magic Rises? I wonder if I skipped it for now, would I miss anything important? Then again I don’t like going out of order.
I love Jenn Bennet, I bought both of the Roaring Twenties novel when it came out, but they’re both still sitting on my bookshelf unread. Fail.
Oh and The Collectors Society sounds sooo good! Been on my radar for awhile now.

I don’t think it’s necessary to read Gunmetal Magic before Magic Rises. Raphael and Andrea are in Magic Rises but not very much. So, I’m pretty sure you’re safe. 🙂
Yes! The Jenn Bennet seires sounds really great and I’ve heard good things about it. Its still sitting on top of my TBR pile though. I need to read it soon.
